The tenth annual West Berks Scrabble Tournament was due to be held on Saturday 16th January 2010. The event is organised by the West Berks Scrabble Club and all proceeds from the event will be donated to the Club's selected charity.
This year the Club has again selected the The Duchess Of Kent House in Reading as the beneficial charity. This decision was influenced by the care given by this organisation to one of our members in the final stages of her life. Details of the Duchess Of Kent House organisation can be obtained from here.
With 90 participants due to attend, coming from as far afield as Castleford, Bristol, Southend and the south coast, the organiser’s main aim was to ensure that both players and support staff could safely get to the venue, and that any cancellation was made early enough to allow people to cancel their plans, but late enough to get a forecasted picture of the forthcoming weather. With snow falling for most of the Wednesday prior to the event, with fog also expected, we reluctantly had to cancel the tournament and face the logistical headache of contacting all participants and refunding their entry fees.
A significant number of the 90 Scrabble players, elected to donate their refund cheques to the club’s nominated charity for this year, the Duchess of Kent House Hospice in Reading.
As a result of this outstanding generosity, the Club was able to present the charity with a cheque for £600. This represented the full value of all donated refunds, with the tournament loss borne by the Club.
The cheque was presented to Mr George Solly (left) on Tuesday February 4th by Michael Wilson, the widower of former club member Tricia Wilson at Duchess of Kent House.
